Bobbi Brown and Lauren Luke

2 makeup artists i like are Bobbi Brown and Lauren Luke.

Bobbi Brown is obviously a very famous makeup artist with her own makeup brand.
Soon as she was able to work, Bobbi started working at a cosmetics stall in her local town to begin her makeup work experience and eventually she moved to Boston to go to Boston's Emerson College, where she earned a B.F.A. in theatrical makeup. Upon graduation, she moved to New York City to make it as a professional makeup artist. She showed her portfolio to anyone who would look at it, slowly built up contacts, and experienced the challenges typical of most freelance makeup artists trying to make it in Manhattan.  Bobbi felt nearly all products looked too artificial, making it impossible to create a gorgeous, no-makeup look, which is why she decided to make her own makeup brand.
Ten years into her freelance career, a chance meeting with a chemist at a magazine photo shoot changed everything. She wanted to make a lipstick that would loo, k natural and beautiful without being smelly or greasy and after discussing this with the chemist the chemist made the lipstick following Bobbi's unprecedented specifications and the result was Brown Lip Color, a pinky-brown shade. Nine other brown-based lipstick shades followed soon after, and Bobbi's set of lipsticks was complete. In 1991, her 10 lipsticks debuted at the Bergdorf Goodman under the name of Bobbi Brown essentials. Bobbi was expecting to sell 100 in a month. She sold 100 within the first day.
The message was clear: Women wanted makeup that was simple, flattering, and wearable.
Since then her career has boomed and she is now one of the worlds most famous names in the makeup industry.

Lauren Luke, isnt as well known but i personally think she is brilliant! she began doing makeup tutorials on Youtube for looks from music videos and films and as her popularity grew she even managed to get her own makeup brands created! Perhaps another Bobbi Brown story in the making? Hopefully! Here is her Youtube link, check her out :D >> http://www.youtube.com/user/panacea81

Thanks for reading guys, Luv JD xxxx
But despite the ups and downs, her talent and drive earned her coveted gigs with top magazines, photographers, and models. Bobbi began her collaboration with photographers Bruce Weber, and Arthur Elgort for American Vogue, as well as with the late Francesco Scavullo for Cosmopolitan and Self. A seven-page spread of full-face beauty shots of supermodel Tatiana Patitz—shot by Wayne Maser—also put Bobbi's work front and centre.

Bobbi's big breakthrough was her first American Vogue cover. The image was shot by famed photographer Patrick Demarchelier and featured the soon-to-be-supermodel Naomi Campbell, made up by Bobbi Brown. Seven years after arriving to New York City knowing no one, Bobbi was part of the club. The industry took notice.

Bobbi's Big Idea

Bobbi's Big Idea

As a successful makeup artist with access to everything in the market, Bobbi found nearly all products looked too artificial, making it impossible to create a gorgeous, no-makeup look.

Ten years into her freelance career, a chance meeting with a chemist at a magazine photo shoot changed everything. "I had the idea to create a lipstick that didn't smell, wasn't dry or greasy, and looked like lips, only better—and I told the chemist about it," she says.

The chemist made the lipstick following Bobbi's unprecedented specifications and the result was Brown Lip Color, a pinky-brown shade.

The Birth of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics & Bobbi Brown Today

The Birth of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics
Word spread quickly. Bobbi's unique approach to cosmetics was a long-awaited gift for women who wanted a more natural look. The magazine industry's most prominent beauty editors got behind Bobbi, and her small, insider brand garnered big time buzz.

The range expanded beyond lipstick. Bobbi's foundations were yellow-based, not pink, revolutionising face makeup as it's known today. And, before long, she showed that she was as adept at neutrals as she was at bright and bold colours.

This sea change in the beauty market caught the attention of cosmetics empire Estée Lauder, who bought Bobbi Brown Cosmetics in 1995, just four years after the company's inception. Today, Bobbi Brown retains creative control of the brand.

Bobbi Brown Today
In addition to running her company, Bobbi continues to pursue her craft by creating the runway looks for New York Fashion Week. A permanent fixture backstage, she works with the industry's best designers including Rachel Roy, J. Mendel, Erin Fetherston, Tory Burch and Cynthia Rowley.

Bobbi often does how-to segments on The Today Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show, and her advice can be found in syndicated columns and advice features for magazines and websites around the globe.

Of course, you can always find Bobbi where she began—on the set. Bobbi is still the world's most celebrated makeup artists for personalities and fashion magazines.

A New York Times bestselling author, Bobbi has written five instructional and engaging beauty and lifestyle books: Bobbi Brown Beauty, Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty, Bobbi Brown Beauty Evolution, Bobbi Brown Living Beauty and Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual.

For Bobbi, making other people's lives better simply makes sense. "I love helping others because it feels good," she says. On a year-round basis, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics donates generous financial and in-kind support to organisations including Dress for Success and the Jane Addams Vocational High School.

thestres in scotland

Its christmas coming up, which means PANTO TIME!! Great time for makeup artists.

In glasgow we have a lot of pantos this year, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Wizard that Never Was, Peter Pan...the usual favourites.

The panto makeup industry is very popular the last months of the year creating a lot of jobs. The panto makeup is usually very animated and not like ur usual straigh makeup so would be fun to do.

My college class will be attanding The Wizard That Never Was, OBVIOUSLY to check out the makeup..... should be fun!x

Halloween Fundraiser

Well on Wednesday last week my college class had our halloween fundraiser which raised around £300!

went very well i think, we had cakes, sweeties, face painting, SFX, raffles and spent the day harrasing the students of James Watt to buy them from us aswell as jumping around dancing in out costumes!

Everybodys costumes were brilliant and we all had great fun, we all worked together and the day went smoothly.
I think the most popular stall was the SFX and facepainting, although the bags of mixed sweeties went really quickly also (by me! lol). And the raffle prizes we all put together looked amazing! It contained DVDs, sweeties, halloween toys and halloween makeup and accessories. Still need to find one of our winners who changed rooms before we selected our winners, so on the hunt we go tomorrrow!

All in all i think it went really well although i did find that alot of people thought we wer from previous classes who had also done fundraisers the days before so not everybody was interested in buying anything from us :( but we did well with what we had! *woooo!!*

My Halloween Character!

In class over the halloween period I was practicing my Sally character makeup from The Nightmare Before Christmas! LOVE THIS FILM!

I did it rather well I think, will be adding pictures of my work soon (problems with adding pictures from my phone :( ) I love the fact that although the character is a doll model in the films, when doing the character makeup the scars and stitches I do are made to look as real as possible with the flesh pulled with the string but the cartoon-like eyes are made to look animated. Getting both to work together is quite a challange but was excellent fun and such a great feeling when I manage to get it looking perfect! :D

I did make slight changes though when it came to the stitching, the stiches are pale on the character but I did them to look like black thread holding her together, just so it could contrast against the colouring I did to show the skin being tightly pulled. Also felt it helped with the definition of her cheeks.

Images to follow guys, shant be long!

My Fave Film Makeup Designs!xx

I love films! watching DVDs I always loved to sit and watch the extras and see how everything is made and how they did the SFX and makeup on sets. This interest is partly why I want to get into makeup artistry. Here is some of my fave ones for you :) x

The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger Joker...

Heath ledgers Joker with washed out facepaint

Here is Heath Ledger with his scars behind the scenes before the facepaint is applied, SFX used.

Shaun Of The Dead - zombies

Each zombie has eye contacts, wounds with blood and cuts and scars using special effects.

A Nightmare On Elm Street - Freddy Krueger

The burns effects or Freddy are amazing!

30 Days Of Night - vampires

The vampires in '30 Days of Night' are fantastic looking! The teeth, eye contacts, flawless pale skin and sharp features make them look very scary, and sooo much blood on the victims makes the film extra gorey.

Edward Scissorhands - Edward

Edwards scars, old and new are done very well using special effects.

This was some of my fave films which have fantastic special effects. Hopefully one day I will get to work on a film and create this kind of work.

Thanks for reading folks! Luv JD xxxx

General Rounding Up :) xx

First month of college gone and it has flew in. My first expectations I expected to have alot of practical work, get practicing hair and makeup methods and gradually build up our skills. We had this...times 10! Right away we were given research tasks for all kinds of makeup and hairstyling, things I had never even seen or heard of, methods I didn't know of, even working on wigs which I never thought i would have to learn about. was a real shock to the system how quickly we were thrown right in to everything! Even making this blog, for a cave woman like myself I found quite difficult. But I have to admit I'm glad of it now because just a few weeks in now I feel like i can do alot more than I thought I would have at this stage of my course.

The college has supplied us with materials and brushes for through-out the course, we will have out own t-shirts (which I cannot wait to jazz up with my own style) and we are given alot of help and support with our tasks.

Think the funniest moment in college so far was last week when we had our which demo of a witch done by one of our lecturers. Yes, I was the model, and by the time she was finished paintin my face, wrinkling my skin, drooping my eyes, frizing up my hair and putting horrible stains on my teeth I didn't recognise myself!! Was very scary, and hilarious at the same time. Had to pose for pictures which were posted all over facebook, lol! Infact I should try and post a picture of it on here, give you all a giggle heehee.

Have really been enjoying my hairdressing, seeing as I haven;t always been good with hair. My own hair is very VERY long and I don't tend to style it so I never really learned how to style hair. I can now pin-curl hair and I can style and set hair using rollers which I have always wanted to be able to do! GO ME!

As of now I wouldn't say I have a particular makeup artist as my idol, but I want to build myself up to be as good as some of the best! I have great admiration for those who can do such amazing work on filmset for those like Tim Burton. ANYTHING done in tim Burton films blows my mind\! I wanna be able to do that stuff....

By the time I have completed my course I want to be able to do anything I set my mind to and create a fun-filled, successful career for myself. Follow my life moto....

If you want something in life, MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Thanks for reading my post peeps, big luvs, JD xxxx

Stress and Confusion!!xx

hey guys! apologies for not having anything uploaded so far. unfortunately my laptop at home has become sickly and has a virus :( so not been able to update anybody on my work so far.

So far i have been doing hairdressing which involves setting and styling, SPFX makeup meaning that on a wednesday afternoon I have been returning home covered in cuts and bruises (FAKE!!), which has been causing so many confused faces on my journey home, heehee. Also doing basic makeup, wigmaking and of course attempting to build up my blog.

Doing very well so far and hopefully ASAP I will be uploading pics of my work for you all to see!
